We are seeking a motivated and dynamic genetic counselor to join our Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics. This position primarily involves providing genetic counseling support for grant-funded research studies focusing on advancing genomic medicine. The role also includes delivering genetics education, counseling and support to patients and/or families who are seen in our practice, both in-person and through remote clinical services. Clinical coverage will mostly involve genetic counseling related to hereditary cancer predisposition. The individual in this position will work closely with the Director and Deputy Director of the Penn Medicine Center for Genomic Medicine (PCGM) and may be involved in educational and organizational initiatives that align with the Center's mission and goals. This role offers a unique opportunity to impact patient care directly while also contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge on genetics care delivery through research. This position is contingent upon grant funding.
Summary:
- The Genetic Counselor 1 will provide genetic counseling services using basic skills and competencies and provide care coordination to patients in the practice. He or she will apply knowledge and skills to provide patient care, with assistance from senior team members, as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare for cases by identifying relevant medical records and ensuring that these are obtained
- Collect and evaluate patient medical history, construct a pedigree using appropriate nomenclature
- Perform comprehensive genetic risk assessment, explain natural history of diagnosis, explain relevant genetic factors, explain available testing and facilitate testing
- Interpret genetic test results and communicate to patients and other healthcare professionals.
- Perform psychosocial assessment and provide counseling
- Document clinical encounter
- write clinic notes, physician letters, patient letters, and other communications
- Collaborate with supervising physicians/providers and other care providers
- Begin to recognize areas for improvement within the clinic
Credentials:
- Application for Genetic Counseling license must be completed within 30 days of start date as required by the state in which patients will be seen. Barring any circumstances outside of the incumbents control the license must be in place by completion of the 180 day probationary period. Failure to obtain license by the end of the 180-day introductory period will result in termination. (Required)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Master's DegreeACGC accredited genetic counseling training program (Required)
- Demonstrated effective communication within a clinical setting to contribute to continuity of care. One-year clinical genetic counseling experience or relevant clinical rotation experience. Experience working within an academic health care setting. Familiarity with an electronic medical record systems comparable in complexity currently utilized EPIC EMR. (Required)
